HOT TEXAS SWING BAND : Cd “Hot Texas”( 2012) auto-produit.  J’adore le western swing surtout quand il est joué par des musiciens exceptionnels ; c’est pas facile à trouver mais c’est le cas avec ce groupe emmené par Alex DORMONT qui a composé 8 titres sur les 12 de ce superbe album. Les musiciens sont talentueux avec une mention spéciale pour Karen BILLER à la batterie et le guitariste Rick McRAE. Mes titres préférés : « Walking Away with my Heart », »When the Last Bottle is Gone », »Somewhere South of San Antone » et l’instrumental »Hot Texas ».

HOT TEXAS SWING BAND: Cd " Texas Hot " (2012) self-produced. I love western swing especially when played by exceptional musicians, it is not easy to find but it is the case with this group led by Alex DORMONT who wrote eight of the 12 tracks of this superb album. The musicians are talented with a special mention to Karen BILLER on drums and guitarist Rick McRAE . COLIN PAUL : Cd “That’s Cool” ( Jagar records 2012). Colin PAUL et son groupe les Persuaders sont au top du Rock’n’Roll en Angleterre. Depuis environ 10 ans la participation de Colin Paul à la célébration annuelle en l’honneur d’Elvis à Memphis est un des moments forts du festival. Sur ce superbe CD , 14 titres tous composés par le trio Rayburn Anthony- Jim Newcomb-Geoff Taggart : des compositions exceptionnelles qui sonnent comme des titres d’Elvis et pourtant ce sont des originaux.  Mes préférés : « Painted it Blue, « Lover Boy » , « Nothing Good About Goodbye » , « My Lonely Heart”.

COLIN PAUL: Cd "That's Cool" (Jagar records 2012). Colin Paul and his band the Persuaders are  one of the top on the UK Rock'n'Roll circuit. For about 10 years the participation of Paul Colin at the annual celebration in honor of Elvis in Memphis is one of the highlights of the festival. On this superb CD, 14 tracks all composed by Rayburn Anthony-Jim Newcomb, Geoff Taggart:  exceptional compositions that sound like songs of Elvis and yet are original. Comme promis le mois dernier voici le groupe australien de Paulie BIGNELL ( guitare) emmené par Rock Bottom (James Moloney) harmonica et chant : un son très rock/blues avec des réussites exceptionnelles comme : « Skinny , Skinny , Skinny » , « Love so Much » , le superbe « Live it Up » , « Burn Rubber Burn », « Six Days on the Road » ou « Team Cream ». Un superbe cd et une exclusivité dans Memphis Tennessee.

As promised last month following the Australian group Paulie BIGNELL (guitar) led by Rock Bottom (James Moloney) harmonica and vocals:  a sound very rock/blues with exceptional achievements as "Skinny, Skinny, Skinny," "Love so Much" the superb "Live it Up," "Burn Rubber Burn," "Six Days on the Road" or " Team Cream ". A beautiful and exclusive cd in Memphis Tennessee.

 

PETE BOY’S PARTY at CAFE 52  sur Snowflake records -1993.  Ce groupe finlandais exceptionnel  est  la vieillerie » de ce mois-ci . Le chanteur Pete Boy fondera ensuite le groupe T-BIRD GANG totalement inspiré par Gene VINCENT. Le chant est superbe , la qualité musicale exceptionnelle. C’est totalement inspiré et jamais copié.

PETE BOY'S PARTY at CAFE 52 on Snowflake -1993 records. This exceptional Finnish group is the oldies of this month. Singer Pete Boy will found lately the T-BIRD GANG group totally inspired by Gene Vincent. The song is beautiful, the musical quality is exceptional. This is totally inspired and never copied.

My favorite: "Hold Me, Hug Me, Rock Me," "You Told a FIB", "Jezebel", "Great Balls of Fire," "Roll Over Beethoven", "By the Light of the Silvery Moon," "I 'm Goin' Home".  We will hear the following albums of T-Bird Gang in the coming weeks.

FENDERS 55 : CD « Troublemaker » 2013 ( sur le label suisse  TCY). 1er album de ce groupe de 4 musiciens originaires du Sud de l’Allemagne qui existe depuis 2006 et qui  a joué dans plein de concerts en Suisse et en Allemagne, avec les Boppin’ B, Carlos and the Bandidos ou les Pinestripes. Leur  musique est faite de country , de rockabilly ou de surf composé par le groupe ; leurs compositions parlent de bolides customisés  , d’amour , de cœurs brisés , de cowboys…..à une époque ou les voitures étaient belles , longues , chromées avec des ailerons sans fin…Mes titres préférés : « Truck Driving Man » , « Shot a Man » , « Midnight Train » , « Black Rider » « Everytime ».

FENDERS 55: CD "Troublemaker" 2013 (on the Swiss label TCY). 1st album of this group of four musicians from Southern Germany which has existed since 2006 and played in a lot of concerts in Switzerland and Germany, with Boppin 'B, Carlos and the Bandidos or Pinestripes. Their music is made of country, rockabilly or surf composed by the band, and their compositions are talking about customized cars, love, broken hearts, cowboys ..... at a time when cars were beautiful, long, with chrome fin endless ... The WAILIN’ ELROYS : CD « Route 33 » (Rhythm Bomb records) 2005-2006. 4 musiciens originaires de l’Ohio, emmenés par Bram RIDDLEBARGER dont la voix ressemble à celle de Wayne HANCOCK. Le climat sonore est très country /honky tonk/boogie  avec des musiques et un son très original. 14 titres (+ un bonus « Real Gone Daddy ») et 10 compos de Bram Riddlebarger. Parmi mes préférés : « Scaredy Blues » , « Hot Rod Road », « Route 33 », « Someone Picked my Flower » , une belle reprise de « All I Can Do is Cry », « Because of you » et « Break from the Line ».

RAY CAMPI : “the Rollin’ Rock Recording vol.1” ( Part records -2013). Le label Allemand de A. Widder ré-édite 2 albums devenus collectors du pionnier Ray CAMPI sortis en 1974 et 1977 sur le label  Rollin’ Rock (de Ron WEISER). A cette époque , Ray Campi peu connu en Europe , va devenir une légende d’une part parce qu’il joue de presque tous les instruments sur ses 1ers disques et d’autre part parce qu’il est à l’origine du retour de la contrebasse slappée dans tous les groupes de rockabilly du revival des années 70. Ray a aussi toujours fait la promotion d’artistes injustement oubliés comme Jimmy SKINNER et Gene SNOWDEN. Ces vinyls étaient à l’époque enregistrés artisanalement et quelque fois les titres sont d’inégale valeur mais ce sont des témoignages d’une époque bénie révolue et des pièces de collection recherchées.

Mes préférés : « Rockabilly Rebel » , « Rockin’& Rollin » , « When I Saw your Face in the Moon » , « Second Story Man » , « Separate Ways » , « Ruby Ann » et « Jimmy Skins the Blues ».

RAY CAMPI : "the Rollin' Rock Recording vol.1 " (Part Records -2013 ). The German label of A. Widder re-releases 2 albums become collectors of pioneer Ray CAMPI released in 1974 and 1977 on the label Rollin' Rock (of Ron WEISER ). At this time, Ray Campi little known in Europe , will become a legend in part because he plays almost all the instruments on his 1st disc and secondly because he is the back’s source of the slap bass in all groups rockabilly revival of the 70s. Ray also promoted unjustly forgotten artists as Jimmy SKINNER and Gene SNOWDEN . These vinyls were at this time, homemade recorded and sometimes the titles are of unequal value, but they are evidence of a bygone era and pieces of collection very rare.

My favorite : " Rockabilly Rebel ", " Rockin ' & Rollin”, “When I Saw your Face in the Moon ", " Second Story Man" ," Separate Ways ", " Ruby Ann " and " Jimmy Skins the Blues ."

ROBB SHENTON and the Western All Stars : “We’re Gonna Rock” ( CD Fury records -2011). Album consacré au rock and roll américain des  années  50 (en forme d’hommage). 11 titres sur cet album dont une compo de Robb Shenton. Mes préférés : la magnifique reprise de « We’re Gonna Rock » ( de Gunther  Lee Carr) qui donne son nom à l’album, « Sure Do Love You Baby» ( de Bobby Lee Trammell), « Train Kept Rollin’ » (de Tiny Bradshaw), le « Lonely Blue Boy » de Conway Twitty ou « Rockin’ Little Angel » de Ray Smith. C’est bien joué et bien chanté, un Cd superbe .

Album dedicated to American rock and roll 50s (as a tribute  . 11 tracks on this album including a composition of Robb Shenton. My favorite : the super cover of "We're Gonna Rock" (Gunther Lee Carr) which gives its name to the album, "Sure Do Love You Baby " ( Bobby Lee Trammell ), "Train Kept Rollin '" (Tiny Bradshaw), the " Lonely Blue Boy " by Conway Twitty or " Rockin ' Little Angel " by Ray Smith. It is well played and well sung , a superb Cd .

 

PAULIE BIGNELL : « Red Eye Flight » ( CD 2011 sur Black Market Music enregistré à Melbourne) : chanteur et guitariste  australien ,  en trio avec Preston HUBBARD ( à la basse) et Joe MEYER ( batterie). 14 titres sur ce superbe CD très rock/blues avec souvent une rythmique irrésistible et dansante . Il  y a quelques belles reprises comme : « Truck Drivin’ Man » , « Tiger by the Tail » ou le superbe slow « Send me some Lovin’ ». Parmi  mes  préférés : « Red Eye Flight » « Stoned Cold’n’Drunk » , »Her and Me » , « Not if but When » (superbe slow/rock).

Superbe son rock blues. Mes préférés : « I Fly with you » ( à la manière de Fats Domino) ou « Poultry »( très inspiré par Bo Diddley) , « Only for Loving you » et « Just A Little Love ». A noter de belles reprises comme « I Ain’t Got you » de Billy Boy Arnold ou le superbe « Everything I Do is Wrong » de Charlie Rich.

C’est le retour d’un  des groupes mythiques du rockabilly revival anglais des  années 70 : les musiciens sont les mêmes , ils ont juste un petit vieilli ( et perdu leur « ducktail »). Sur ce CD de 13 titres , tous composés par WHIRLWIND , on retrouve un peu le son teddy boy des années 70. Mes préférés : « If I Ain’t Rockin’ », « I’m wondering », les superbes rock Teddy Boy « Turn Around » et « Love Machine” et le slow-rock “Miles Apart”.

Parmi  mes préférés : « Miss Jessie Lee » , « Broken Heart » et « Stay Awhile » ( Billy HANCOCK) , « Write Me in Care of the Blues » , « I Get the Blues when it Rains” et “Forbidden Fruits” ( par Marti BROM) , “Lindy Rock” par le Memphis Rockabilly Band ou “It’s Not the Presents Under My Tree” par le grand Narvel FELTS.

C’est un groupe de 4 musiciens originaires de Orange County (en Californie) influencés par  des musiciens comme Link WRAY, les ASTRONAUTS  ou les VENTURES.  Les DYNOTONES cultivent la nostalgie du son des fifties et ils sont tout simplement  l’un des groupes instrumentaux les plus importants du moment. Mes titres préférés :  «Enless Dream » , « Rip  Tide » , « Bikini Wobble » , « the Chisler » ou «Injector ».

The JOHN LINDBERG trio : Cd « Rock this Christmas » ( Enviken records -2012). Sur les 12 titres de cet album, 10 sont des compos personnelles de ce trio Suédois quelques fois un peu déjanté. Enfin un album de Noel original et superbement joué ( entre rock et blues). Encore une fois la preuve qu’on peut faire des titres de Noel  dansants et  rock…Parmi mes préférés : « Christmas all over Again » , « Christmas » , « Make my Wish Come True » , « Santa’s Gettin’ Ready for December »  et leur reprise très bluesy de « Santa Claus us Back in Town » .

The WHITE LINES : « Rockabilly Fever » (CD 2003 sur Rebel Music). C’est un album assez ancien de ce groupe  allemand  déjà diffusé dans l’émission; certains titres sont moins bons que sur les précédents albums. Cependant, il reste encore quelques belles pépites comme : «Drivin’ Down the Highway», «Thinkin’ of You », « Rockabilly Fever » , « Last Days »et « White Line Boogie » tous composés par les frères Tesch.

The WHITE LINES : " Rockabilly Fever " (CD 2003 Rebel Music) . This is a fairly old album of this German group already broadcasts the show, some titles are worse than on previous albums . However, there are still some beautiful gems like "Drivin’ Down the Highway", " Thinkin' of You", " Rockabilly Fever ", " Last Days " and " White Line Boogie " all composed by Tesch brothers.

The HI-TONES : « I’m Gonna Leave You » ( 2013 El Toro records) : 1er album de ce groupe russe , fondé en 2010 à Moscou et tout simplement un des meilleurs groupe de rockabilly de Russie. Au début ils ne jouaient que des reprises de leur musique favorite le rockabilly des années 50. Aujourd’hui sur cet album de 14 titres 11 sont des compositions personnelles du groupe ; leur musique dansante s’entend sur toutes les pistes de danse des festivals en Europe et ailleurs . C’est bien joué avec une belle guitare et quelques rocks doux qui rappellent un peu Buddy HOLLY. Mes titres préférés : « I’m Gonna Leave You », « Please Come back », «I Hate your Dog »,  « Hold me Tight », « My Little Baby » et le superbe instrumental « Big Sur ».

The HI -TONES : " I'm Gonna Leave You " (2013 El Toro Records ) 1st album of this Russian group, founded in 2010 in Moscow and simply one of the best rockabilly band from Russia. At first they only played covers of their favorite rockabilly music of 50s. Today, on this album of 14 tracks, 11 are original compositions of the group ; their danceable music is heard on all the dancefloor of festivals in Europe. It is played with a beautiful guitar and some nice rocks which reminds Buddy HOLLY sound. My favorite tracks : " I'm Gonna Leave You",  "Please Come Back" , "I Hate your Dog",  “Hold me Tight ", " My Little Baby " and the beautiful instrumental " Big Sur ".

The WISE GUYZ : Cd »Let’s Rock the Floor » (2013- El Toro records) : 5ème album de ce trio Ukrainien (originaire de Karkhov) considéré comme l’un des meilleurs groupes de rockabilly du moment et pas seulement en Europe de l’Est ! Sur ce Cd 14 titres tous composés par le guitariste et chanteur Dimitri Gusev (alias Chris Bird). La musique est très country western/ jump-blues et rockabilly ; et c’est vraiment très bien joué.. !! Mes titres préférés : “Honky Tonk Boogie » , « Do It Slow » , « Treat Me Like I Say” , “Rockin’ New year”, “What’s wrong with me “et “You’re  Getting’ Too Much”.

The WISE GUYZ : Cd " Let's Rock the Floor" (2013 - El Toro records) : 5th album of this Ukrainian trio (native of Kharkov ), considered one of the best rockabilly groups of the moment and not only in Eastern Europe! On this Cd, 14 tracks all composed by the guitarist and singer Dimitri Gusev (aka Chris Bird). The music is very country western / jump -blues and rockabilly , and it's really well play .. ! My favorite songs : " Honky Tonk Boogie", " Do It Slow ", " Treat Me Like I Say", "Rockin' New year ", " What's wrong with me" and "You're Gettin ' Too Much".

The FOUR VEGAS : CD " I Soliti Four Vegas" (2011): Italian Rock'n'Roll group specialised in the covers of titles of 50s : 18 songs with dance versions of "Rock and roll is here to stay”, "Shake Rattle and Roll ", "Ready Teddy", " Wildwood Ways", "Such a Night", " His Latest Flame ", " Hound Dog " and " You Do not Know me" . They are excellent musicians, It is very well played and well sung . A great CD.

MIKE AIKEN : “Captains and Cowboys” ( sur Northwind records-2013). C’est le 6éme album de Mike AIKEN , trés country-rock. Il a fallu 2 ans pour mener à bien ce projet  (12 titres et 9 compositions personnelles) . Pour ces histoires de capitaines et de cowboys, Mike sait de quoi il parle : il a vécu sur un bateau ces 20 derniéres années, a navigué sur les mers du monde avec une licence de capitaine , a élevé des chevaux chez lui à la campagne……Mes préférés : « Coal Train » , «Bring out the bourbon » , « « Summertime song », et « Take the boy fishin’ ».

MIKE AIKEN : " Captains and Cowboys" (Northwind records- 2013). This is the 6th album of Mike Aiken, very country-rock. It took two years to complete this project (12 tracks and 9 original compositions). For these stories about cowboys and captains, Mike knows what he speaks about: he lived on a boat these 20 last years , sailed on the seven seas with a licensed captain, raised horses home in the country ... My favorite are "Coal Train", "Bring out the bourbon", "Summertime song" and "Take the boy fishin ' ".

TJENDOL SUNRISE : « There’s always Tomorow » ( CD autoproduit-2011). Groupe Hollandais composé d’excellents musiciens, notamment le guitariste Patrick KERGER, grand admirateur du groupe Allemand  TIELMAN Brothers. Le son est très 60’s avec une belle guitare. Mes préférés : « Bring Back your Sweet Lovin’ » , « Nothing Left of Yesterday » , « There’s Always Tomorow » , « King and Drinks”  et “Move Me”.

Tjendol SUNRISE : "There's always Tomorow " (self-produced CD - 2011). Netherland group with the excellent musicians, including guitarist Patrick KERGER , a great of the German group TIELMAN Brothers. This is a very 60's sound with a nice guitar. My favorite : " Bring Back your Sweet Lovin’",  "Nothing Left of Yesterday", " There's Always Tomorow ", " King and Drinks " and " Move Me ".

PAT ROBERTS and the HEYMAKERS : CD « Lonesome and Blue » (Electric Lotus label -2012).Trio américain de rock doux grace à la belle voix de Pat Roberts. 13 titres sur cet album , avec 6 belles reprises de classiques comme le superbe « Uptown » de Roy Orbison , le classique « Let’s Talk About us » et  « Love Me » superbe slow-rock chanté à l’époque par Elvis. Parmi mes préférés aussi le titre « Baby » composé par Pat Roberts un super rock trés dansant. Une exclusivité Memphis Tennessee et un CD exceptionnel.

BLUE LUNCH CD «Saxophone Shootout II Live » (2011) label Wilberts records , enregistré en public dans un club de jazz de l’Ohio le 26 février 2011. Encore une fois le groupe de jump/blues emmené par le chanteur et guitariste  Bob FRANK déploie sa section de cuivres très swing. Parmis mes titres préférés : « Lowe Groovin » et les très dansants « If it Ain’t Me » et « Rib Joint » (instrumental)…c’est le côté R’n’Blues/swing de Memphis Tennessee.

BLUE LUNCH CD "Saxophone Shootout II Live" ( 2011) Wilberts records, recorded live in a jazz club in Ohio on February 26th 2011. Once the group jump / blues led by the singer and guitarist Bob FRANK deploys his swing brass section . Among my favorite songs : "Lowe Groovin” and very dancing "If it  Ain’t Me" and "Rib Joint"( instrumental) ... It is the R'n'Blues / swing side of Memphis Tennessee.

CD Oriental Bop : « Japanese Authentic Rockabilly » (2009 label Monophonic records Ozaka Japon) : compilation de groupes japonais avec The BIG CHIEF ( 3 titres excellents et une preuve d’humour et d’autodérision avec ce superbe « Little Yellow Men » !), le SPACE GEAR Rock’n’Roll trio et une composition perso « Heaven » suivi d’une bonne reprise du classique 50’s de Billy BARRIX « Cool Off Baby ». Le son de cette compilation est très « monophonic » , très rockabilly primitif des années 50 avec souvent la batterie très en avant ( ce qui n’est pas pour me déplaire).

CD Oriental Bop "Authentic Japanese Rockabilly " (2009 Monophonic record - Ozaka Japan) : Compilation of Japanese groups with The BIG CHIEF (three excellent tracks and a sense of humor and self-mockery with this superb "Little Yellow Men"! ), The SPACE GEAR Rock'n'Roll trio and personal composition "Heaven" followed by a good cover of the classic 50's Billy BARIIX " Cool Off Baby. "The sound of this compilation is " monophonic " very primitive rockabilly 50s with very often the battery in front (which does not displease me ) .

The TROUBLE BOYS : “We Keep the Drapes Alive” (CD 2012 sur Part records): au départ il y a le groupe norvégien de rock Teddy Boy : the TEEN CATS formé dans les années 80 (séparé peu de temps après). Sur cet album c’est Stig Rune Reiten ( frère du batteur  Stein Erich) qui a composé 12 des 17 titres de l’album ; il ne fait pas partie du groupe mais c’est lui qui a trouvé le nouveau nom du groupe  « the TROUBLE BOYS » par référence à un morceau de Dave EDMUNDS. Cette formation a beaucoup travaillé pour nous offrir cet album dans le style musical des TEEN CATS , ( Teddy Boy à souhait). Mes titres préférés : « Get Drunk » , « Rockabilly Special » , « Bop A Billy girl », « Teddy Girl » et « Tonight ».

The TROUBLE BOYS : "We Keep the Drapes Alive" (CD 2012 on Part records) : At the beginning, there is the Norwegian Teddy Boy rock band: the TEEN CATS formed in the 80s (separated shortly after ). Stig Rune Reiten (brother of drummer Erich Stein ) who composed 12 of the 17 tracks of this album , He is not part of the group but he was who found the new name of this group" the TROUBLE BOYS " by reference to a track of Dave EDMUNDS. This group has worked hard to give us this album the musical style TEEN CATS (Great Teddy Boy sound). My favorite tracks :  " Get Drunk ", " Rockabilly Special ", " Bop A Billy Girl", " Teddy Girl" and " Tonight ."

The JOHNNY LODA Trio : « Godforsaken Land »(Part records 2012). Depuis 1982, le musician italien Ettore CHIAVINATO fait partie du meilleur de la scène rockabilly chez lui en italie …Avec son dernier groupe « Johnny Loda and the Echorecs”, il vient d’enregistrer l’album « Godforsaken Land ». 15 titres dont 10 compositions originales comme « Fish Outta Water », « Johnny’s FXR » , « BBQ Ribs Party ». A noter aussi quelques excellentes reprises de « Her Love Rubbed Off » ( Carl Perkins) , « Rockin’ Gypsy »  (Joe Maphis) ou « Summertime Blues »

C’est  le 1er album de ce trio originaire de Cologne ( en Allemagne ) fondé par Andy Wyatt Christmas.  Jump/blues  et rock’n’roll, c’est le programme de ce trio   , rythmes dansants inspirés par la musique des années 40 et 50.   3 musiciens excellents et une superbe guitare ; 13 titres sur cet album , tous des compos originales dont mes préférés : « Jump to the Beat » , « Well it’s Allright » , « These Boppin’Shoes » , « I’m Still Around » , « Cab Driver Blues » et le superbe slow-rock « Drivin’ Home ».

DRAGON’S BREATH : du rockabilly qui vient tout droit d’extrême orient… et ça ne manque pas de souffle !  CD  compilation de groupes japonais ( sur le label Bo-Bo records -1999 ). 25 groupes sur cette superbe compilation avec des surprises de qualité exceptionnelle comme  le groupe  ATOMIC ( avec « Baby,Baby »), les DYNAMITE GIRLS and Rock’n’Roll trio (reprise de « Teenage Boogie » ), les ZIP STOMPERS ( avec le « Stutterin  Cindy » de Charlie Feathers), du rock/jump superbe avec le groupe BIG JOHN TENTA ( « We still Walk the Way ») ou les ROCKETS qui reprennent de façon magistrale le classique « Rockhouse » de Roy Orbison !

The MIDNIGHT HOWLERS  CD »Howlin » ( 2004) : 3éme CD (autoproduit sur Chubbnutt records) de ce trio anglais emmené  par Sye King , le bassiste. 12 titres sur cet  album dont 8 composés par le groupe  très honky tonk/rock et superbement joués. Mes préférés : « No Regrets » , « Or Maybe two » , « End of the World », « If I tell You » et « Railroad »        .

JP HARRIS and the TOUGH CHOICES : CD « I’ll Keep Calling » ( sur Cow Island Music -2012). Agé de 29 ans JP HARRIS (au physique de bucheron) a passé les 10 précédentes années à bourlinguer un peu partout , comme charpentier, cueilleur de pommes , et plein d’autres petits boulots mal payés , dans le fin fond du Vermont. C’est lui qui a composé les 12 titres de cet album entre country/honky-tonk/western swing. Mes préférés : “Badly Bent” , “ Take it Back”, “I’m Stayin’ Here “, “Cross your Name” et les rocks “Shake it” et “Gear Jammin’ Daddy”.

JP Harris and the TOUGH CHOICES : CD " I'll Keep Calling " (on Cow Island Music -2012 ). Only 29 years old JP wrote all twelve songs on the album honky -tonk / western swing. Living and and working the past 10 years  as carpenter, logger, apple-picking , and slew of other low-paid durty-handed trades in rural Vermont.
